Beberapa di antaranya beroperasi dalam jarak jauh, memberi sinyal ke sel-sel yang jauh; yang lain hanya memberi sinyal kepada tetangga terdekat. Sebagian besar sel dalam organisme multiseluler memancarkan dan menerima sinyal. Penerimaan sinyal tergantung pada protein reseptor, biasanya (tetapi tidak selalu) di permukaan sel, yang mengikat molekul sinyal. Pengikatan mengaktifkan reseptor, yang pada gilirannya mengaktifkan satu atau lebih jalur pensinyalan intraseluler.
