Pada kondisi buruk, seperti Tekanan Darah tinggi, sel miokard distimulasi untuk membesar dengan meningkatkan kerja pompa. Seperti kebanyakan mekanisme adaptasi tubuh, namun, adaptasi seluler terhadap kondisi buruk biasanya hanya berhasil sementara. Stresor yang buruk atau jangka panjang membanjiri proses adaptif dan cedera seluler<br>atau kematian. Cedera bisa jadi reversibel (subletal) atau ireversibel (letal) dan diklasifikasikan secara luas sebagai kimiawi, hipoksik<br>(kekurangan oksigen yang memadai), radikal bebas, disengaja atau tidak disengaja, dan inflamasi atau imunologis. Cedera seluler dari penyebab yang bervariasi memliki manifestasi klinis dan patofisiologi yang berbeda. Stres dari kekacauan metabolik bisa jadi berkaitan dengan akumulasi intraseluler dan meliputi karbohidrat, protein, dan lipid.
