Ketika sel membutuhkan protein tertentu, urutan nukleotida dari bagian yang sesuai dari molekul DNA yang sangat panjang dalam kromosom pertama kali disalin ke dalam RNA (proses yang disebut transkripsi). Ini adalah salinan RNA segmen DNA yang digunakan secara langsung sebagai contoh untuk mengarahkan sintesis protein (suatu proses yang disebut translasi). Aliran informasi genetik dalam sel karena itu dari DNA ke RNA ke protein.
